Story
1984 Mercury Cougar XR-7
Mercury's 1984 brochure gives the XR-7 its own turbocharged 2.3-liter drivetrain, distinct from the V6 and V8 rows for other Cougars. The 140-cubic-inch field is a rounded conversion of the documented 2.3 liters, not a verified factory CID designation.
Drivetrain and availability
The brochure lists a standard three-speed automatic and optional five-speed manual overdrive. Its California footnote describes later-model-year availability for the manual; this is an announced availability qualification, not proof of a particular delivery date. Both rows specify a 3.45 rear axle with Traction-Lok.
Evidence gaps and photo pending
Horsepower, torque, factory engine code and production totals remain unresolved. Shared displacement does not prove identical ratings across transmissions or emissions calibrations. Neither Thunderbird Turbo Coupe figures nor later V8 XR-7 specifications are substituted. The reviewed brochure does not grant image reuse rights; licensed exact-year exterior photography remains pending.
