Story

1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The 1982 Camaro Z28 family combined two-door 2+2 hatchback sport coupe with z28 front air dam, ground-effect rockers, twin-scoop hood, and rear spoiler with LG4 four-barrel Z28, LU5 Cross-Fire Injection Z28, Indy 500 commemorative edition configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.

Engines and transmissions

The LG4 and LU5 shared 305-cubic-inch small-block architecture but differed in compression, induction, output, controls, and permitted power-team combinations. The engineering form records an interim LU5 manual path that the revised January dealer guide no longer permits, so build date and contemporaneous records control. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.

Chassis and brakes

The third-generation chassis replaced the prior leaf-spring layout with front struts and a torque-arm, lower-control-arm, track-bar rear axle on coils. Z28 springs, bars, dampers, steering calibration, brakes, axle, wheels, and tires must be verified as one dated application. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.

Body, trim, and proof

Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.

Still Researching

  • production The 64,882 regular and 6,360 Indy rows are secondary reported figures, and their 71,242 arithmetic family total does not resolve engine, transmission, axle, G80/G92, J65, roof, paint, trim, plant, date, export, or survivor intersections.
  • transmission The August engineering form records an interim LU5 four-speed path while the revised January dealer guide requires LU5 with MX1; no reviewed serial-bound bulletin resolves the exact transition or whether retail cars used the interim combination.
  • paint colors The factory selector establishes nine Z28 colors and approved accent families, but every supplier, stripe, wheel, trim, plant, special-order, repair, and running-date intersection is not transcribed.
  • interior Factory material establishes standard, custom, Conteur, and Indy cabin paths but not every trim code, material, paint pairing, supplier, and running change.
  • authenticity markers Public model-year references cannot establish one survivor's born-with shell, engine, controls, emissions equipment, transmission, axle, chassis, finish, cabin, edition, options, dates, or ownership history.
