Story

1971 Pontiac GTO 455 HO

The 1971 Pontiac GTO 455 HO is the quieter companion to the final-year Judge. The same round-port 455 HO made the Judge important, but it also mattered on standard GTO builds where the value is in the engine path, paperwork, and drivetrain evidence rather than decals.

Reviewed sources describe the 1971 455 HO as Pontiac's low-compression round-port high-output 455, rated around 335 gross horsepower with 310 net horsepower context and 480 lb-ft of torque in the checked model references. It was distinct from the 1970 D-port 455 HO and from the later SD-455, which makes engine-code, casting, intake, exhaust, and documentation review especially important.

The page treats same-year 1971 GTO photos as model-year context unless a source independently proves the 455 HO option. Judge stripes, spoiler, or paint are separate package evidence; they can help explain the year, but they do not prove a non-Judge 455 HO car. The practical check is still PHS/order documentation aligned with engine, transmission, axle, paint, trim, and owner-history records.
