Story

1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS5

For 1971, the Chevelle Super Sport was best treated as the Malibu-series Z15 SS Equipment package rather than as a stand-alone model. Source records place Z15 on Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and Custom El Camino body styles, and the LS5 version paired that package with Chevrolet's 454-cubic-inch Turbo-Jet V8. The power-team reference lists the LS5 as a 365-hp RPO engine for sport coupe, convertible, and pickup applications, with heavy-duty close-ratio four-speed or Turbo Hydra-Matic choices and a 3.31 axle shown as standard for the LS5 row.

The public archive should avoid over-reading badges or modern captions. The strongest identity evidence for a real 1971 SS 454 is paperwork: Chevrolet option documentation, window sticker/build documentation, or a Protect-O-Plate that supports the 454 claim. Registry notes caution that 1971 Z15 could be ordered with several optional V8s, so a matching non-454 V8 by itself does not prove the SS option. Production references record 19,293 Z15 Malibu/Custom El Camino orders, of which 9,502 were SS454 orders; they do not safely break that count down by body style, color, transmission, or individual surviving car.

The structured tables below therefore preserve exact codes and counts only where the cited records support them, and use coverage gaps where the target-specific combination is not verified.
