Story
1970 Holden Torana
The 1970 LC Torana range put short-wheelbase four-cylinder sedans, longer-nose six-cylinder family cars, the sporty GTR, and the new GTR XU-1 under one compact nameplate. They remain on one model-year family page so an enthusiast can compare their bodies, engines, drivetrains, chassis, paint, trim, and proof requirements without navigating duplicate pages.
Regular LC, GTR, and XU-1
Regular, S, and SL Toranas used two- or four-door bodies and four- or six-cylinder power according to model code. The two-door 82911 GTR paired its 2600S engine with a floor four-speed, power front discs, sports suspension, full instruments, vents, stripes, and wide wheels. The August 1970 XU-1 retained 82911 GTR roots but added a distinct engine, chassis, fuel, spoiler, wheel, and decal package.
Four levels of performance
The range began with 56- and 69-bhp 1159-cc Vauxhall fours. Longer-nose models used Holden 2250 and 2600 Red sixes, while the GTR received a two-barrel 2600S. The 1970 XU-1 used a 186-cid 3100X Red six with triple Zenith-Stromberg CD-150 carburetors and a 160-bhp gross rating. An engine swap or triple-carburetor conversion cannot establish GTR or XU-1 identity.
Transmissions and rear axle
Regular LC applications used manual gearboxes or Trimatic according to engine and model. The GTR and 1970 XU-1 used floor-shift four-speeds; Motorsport Australia's historic form identifies the pre-Bathurst-1971 XU-1 gearbox as the Opel unit, not the later Australian M20. Four-cylinder and six-cylinder axle ratios differed, and limited slip requires application and car-specific evidence.
Drums, discs, and coil suspension
Regular models began with drum brakes and could receive front discs. GTR made power front discs standard. XU-1 used thicker 254-mm front discs with two-piston Girlock calipers and rear drums. All used double-wishbone coil-spring front suspension and a coil-sprung trailing-arm live rear axle, but GTR and XU-1 geometry, springs, and calibration must not be generalized to regular cars.
Paint, trim, and cabin
The reviewed 1970 LC ledger lists 21 exterior colors, but does not resolve every model, trim, stripe, and build-date combination. Initial XU-1 stock production centered on Rally Red, Lina Mint, Plum Dinger, and Yellow Dolly. Bucket seats were standard across the range; eligible four-door six-cylinder S and SL cars could use a bench. GTR and XU-1 added sports instruments, wheel, console, floor controls, and configuration-specific trim.
Production and identification
References report 74,627 LC Toranas across the complete October 1969-January 1972 series and an initial 700-car XU-1 commitment. Neither number is an audited calendar-1970 body, engine, transmission, paint, or trim split. Start with the model and body plates, passenger-side inner-guard chassis number, shell, and title, then reconcile engine, gearbox, axle, brakes, suspension, paint, cabin, dates, and ownership records.
Native Australian values
Reviewed references report Australian-dollar release prices and Australian market observations. The current structured pricing and valuation contracts support USD and CAD rather than AUD, so those figures remain cited gaps instead of being mislabeled, silently converted, or presented as appraisals.
