Story

1967 Shelby Cobra

The 1967 Cobra closed Shelby American's original roadster program. It remained the coil-spring Mark III family, but the engine behind the familiar 427 Cobra name depended on the chassis: early final-year cars could retain the 428 Police Interceptor used through the preceding batch, while about the last four dozen returned to Ford 427 power. The last car, CSX3360, left Shelby American in October 1967.

Street identity before visual drama

A regular street Cobra could have under-car exhaust, no roll bar, no hood scoop, road bumpers, a soft top, subdued Sunburst wheels, and a single-four-barrel 427 or 428. CSX3269 was sold in July 1967 in British Racing Green over black with a 428, Sunburst wheels, Blue Dot tires, and a radio. CSX3278 is another documented 428 street car. CSX3359 and CSX3350 document the late return to 427 power.

Side pipes, a hood scoop, roll bar, stripes, competition filler, Halibrand-style wheels, and a more aggressive stance are familiar Cobra cues, but they do not prove Competition or S/C origin. Many street cars were modified that way. Only the Registry and chassis paperwork can establish delivered configuration.

Chassis and drivetrain

The Mark III used a 90-inch wheelbase, four-inch-tube frame, rack-and-pinion steering, independent wishbone and coil-spring suspension at all four wheels, an independent rear drive unit, and four-wheel Girling discs. The regular gearbox was Ford's Toploader four-speed. Engine assembly, induction, gearbox case and ratios, differential, brake hardware, suspension specification, wheels, and dates remain chassis-specific.

Final-year details and options

The Shelby American Collection records period street options including a hood scoop, roll bar, magnesium wheels, radio, and front and rear anti-sway bars. Later cars used round tail lamps with separate red reflectors rather than the earlier rectangular lamps. Those details still require invoice and chassis applicability before they are treated as original to an individual car.

Dates do not always agree

AC billing, shipment, Shelby completion, invoice, retail sale, and title can cross calendar years. CSX3278 is cataloged as a 1967 Cobra but titled as a 1966 Ford. CSX3359 was billed to Shelby in December 1966, sold and transported to its dealer in October 1967, and titled 1967. One date or a 427 badge cannot replace the full chronology.

Production and authenticity

Reviewed sources report 348 coil-spring 427/428 Cobras across 1965-1967 and 260 street roadsters. About 100 street cars received 428 engines, followed by a return to 427 power for roughly the last four dozen. Competition and S/C accounting varies by source and is not presented as a clean 1967-only total.

Authentication starts with the original CSX identity and current Registry record, then reconciles Shelby and AC paperwork, frame and aluminum body construction, panel stamps, delivered engine, Toploader, rear drive, suspension, brakes, colors, trim, ownership, damage, repairs, and restoration. Replicas, continuation cars, re-creations, later engines, and S/C-style parts cannot establish an original 1967 Shelby Cobra.

Market context

The records below include 427 and 428 street cars, restored and modified examples, one S/C comparison, and a current condition guide. Each amount belongs to its stated chassis or guide configuration. Registry standing, originality, body and drivetrain history, restoration quality, and later changes drive the differences; none is an appraisal of another car.

Still Researching

  • production Cross-year street and engine totals are documented, but completion, sale, and title dates prevent a clean audited 1967-only census; S/C category counts also vary by source.
  • paint colors Several exact-chassis delivered colors are documented, but no complete factory 1967 color and trim ordering schedule was found.
  • authenticity markers Model-level markers and detailed chassis examples are published, but public Registry rows and physical stamp photographs are not normalized for every surviving car.
