Story

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The 1967 Shelby GT500 was a Shelby American conversion of Ford's Mustang fastback, sold as a Shelby G.T. model rather than as a regular Ford Mustang trim. Shelby American's February 5, 1967 specification sheet describes both 1967 Shelby GT 350 and GT 500 cars as two-door fastbacks with reinforced unitized construction, export front-end reinforcement, fiberglass nose and hood pieces, side striping, scoops, and GT-specific interior and safety equipment.

For the GT500, the same Shelby literature identifies the engine as a Cobra 428 cu. in. V-8 with advertised 355 horsepower and 420 lb-ft, dual Holley four-barrel carburetors, Cobra aluminum rocker covers and air cleaner, and dual exhaust. A fully synchronized four-speed manual was standard, with heavy-duty Cruise-O-Matic optional. The specification sheet gives GT500 final-drive ratios as 3.50:1 with manual transmission and 3.25:1 with automatic transmission.

The Shelby Research Group production table records 2,050 GT500s in 1967, including 1,374 428-8V fastbacks with four-speed manual transmission and 671 with C-6 automatic, plus three 427 lightweight fastbacks and two special non-fastback or engineering entries. Color and trim totals are registry-derived and should not be used to authenticate any individual car without Shelby factory paperwork and the registry record for that serial number.

This page separates model-line facts from individual-car authenticity. It records paint, trim, production, and equipment evidence from reviewed references, and leaves car-specific verification such as production orders, invoices, and hidden Ford/Shelby identifiers to follow-up review.

  • Registry serial-number history check A SAAC registrar check is serial-number based and may track a Shelby from original dealer through the latest reported owner when records exist; SAAC notes that not all cars have turned up, so absence or incompleteness must not be treated as a model-level authenticity answer. · SAAC 1967 Shelby registrar; individual registry history for the Shelby serial number · fraud detection

Still Researching

  • authenticity markers Resolved facet: documented option verification specifically requires a Shelby VIN plate photo plus Shelby factory paperwork such as the Production Order and/or Sales Invoice, and registry history review is serial-number based. Remaining gap: car-specific hidden-number locations, component casting dates, and the actual paperwork/registry entry for any target serial number were not inspected.
