Story

American Motors introduced the all-new intermediate as the Rambler Rebel for 1967, with SST as its top trim on two body styles: the pillarless hardtop, style 6719-7, and convertible, style 6717-7. Both rode a 114-inch wheelbase. The page uses AMC in its title so enthusiasts can find the car consistently, while preserving the Rambler Rebel name used in the factory literature. SST did not specify an engine. Buyers could choose either 232 six, the 290 two-barrel V8, or a 343 two- or four-barrel V8.

The factory performance chart is the key to the combinations. The standard 232 one-barrel made 145 hp, the 232 two-barrel 155 hp, and the 290 two-barrel 200 hp. The 343 two-barrel made 235 hp and came only with Flash-O-Matic or Shift-Command automatic. The premium-fuel 343 four-barrel made 280 hp and could also use a four-speed floor or console shift. Axle ratios changed with engine and transmission, and Twin-Grip was optional rather than automatic SST equipment. Standard self-adjusting drums could be replaced on V8 cars by Bendix power front discs. Independent front coils and AMC's new four-link, trailing-arm rear suspension carried every SST; V8 cars included a front sway bar, while six-cylinder buyers could order a handling package.

Inside, the SST paired reclining high-back bucket seats and a center armrest with wall-to-wall Herculon carpet, a sports steering wheel, and AMC's safety-styled dashboard. Outside, an all-black grille, SST identification, full wheel discs, a full-length paint stripe, and simulated air-scoop trim separated it from the 550 and 770. Every one of AMC's 15 solid-color choices was available on Rebel 770 and SST models, with documented stripe pairings; a black or white vinyl roof was optional on the hardtop, and the convertible had a power-operated top as standard.

Reference totals report 15,287 SST hardtops and 1,686 SST convertibles, or 16,973 combined. Those totals do not establish an engine, transmission, axle, paint, or option split. Authentication starts with style code 6719-7 or 6717-7 and then reconciles the VIN and body plate, trim and paint codes, drivetrain tags and dates, axle tag, brakes, suspension, interior, and original paperwork. A 343 swap, SST grille, scripts, stripe, or bucket seats can make a convincing car, but those pieces do not establish its original configuration by themselves.
