Story

The 1966 Chevelle SS 396 made Chevrolet's big-block intermediate a regular-production series instead of the 1965 Z16 special package. The SS396 sport coupe and convertible appear in the Chevrolet option and price data as 13817 and 13867 models, with 66,843 sport coupes and 5,429 convertibles listed for the 325-hp Turbo-Jet 396 base configuration. This record tracks the rarer L78 path inside that SS396 series rather than treating every SS396 as a 375-hp car.

RPO L78 was the top 1966 Chevelle big-block: a 396-cubic-inch Turbo-Jet V8 with 11.0:1 compression, mechanical lifters, a high-lift camshaft, Holley carburetion, and a 375-hp gross rating. ChevelleStuff's option table reports 3,099 L78 installations and lists M21 close-ratio 4-speed availability with L78. The standard SS396 manual-transmission note and the optional M21 listing are kept separate here because transmission proof belongs at the individual-car level.

The chassis and appearance picture is also source-bound. Over-Drive describes the 1966 SS396 appearance package with twin simulated air intakes, ribbed color-accented sill and rear-fender lower moldings, SS396 grille and rear-cove emblems, Super Sport rear-fender script, specific wheel covers, red-stripe tires, and all-vinyl interior trim. ChevelleStuff's option and axle pages provide the practical verification details: F40 special suspension, J50 power brakes, J65 sintered metallic brake linings, G80 Positraction, and axle-code prefixes for ratios and metallic-brake combinations. The page therefore presents those items as factory-documented equipment paths, not as proof that every surviving L78 car still carries them.

Paint coverage comes from the 1966 Chevelle paint-code table, which also warns that there are no known color totals by SS396 body style. The authenticity section follows the same boundary: 138-series identity, L78 engine evidence, M21 or axle-code evidence, and paperwork matter more than badges alone.
