Story

1964 Oldsmobile Jetstar I

The 1964 Jetstar I family combined five-passenger two-door pillarless sports coupe, fisher style 3457 with M11 three-speed manual, M35 Hydra-Matic, M37 heavy-duty Hydra-Matic, manual or power steering and brakes configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.

Engines and transmissions

Oldsmobile gave every 1964 Jetstar I the Starfire-specification 394 with four-barrel induction, 10.5:1 compression, 345 gross horsepower, and dual chambered exhaust. The similar-name Jetstar 88 instead used the smaller 330 family, while the Starfire bundled more luxury equipment. Engine stamp, castings, induction, transmission, axle, exhaust, dates, and records must tell one coherent story. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.

Chassis and brakes

The 123-inch-wheelbase Jetstar I used Oldsmobile's Guard-Beam perimeter frame with swept-back torque boxes. Unequal-length control arms and coils located the front wheels; four links and coils located the live rear axle. Eleven-inch drums were standard, with power assist and metallic linings optional. The standard 3.42 axle and optional G80 remain application- and car-specific. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.

Body, trim, and proof

Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.

Still Researching

  • production Two compiled references agree on 16,084 style-3457 cars, but no reviewed audited Oldsmobile ledger establishes that total or breaks it down by transmission, axle, steering, brakes, paint, trim, plant, date, export, or survivor status.
  • paint colors The exact-year chart lists 15 broader Oldsmobile colors and the schedule identifies an optional Jetstar I accent stripe, but no reviewed selector resolves every Jetstar I lower/upper paint, stripe, trim, plant, and build-date combination.
  • interior Five Jetstar I Morocceen color-code families and major cabin equipment are documented, but the complete material, paint, option, supplier, plant, and running-change matrix is unresolved.
  • authenticity markers Public model-year references cannot establish one survivor's born-with style-3457 shell, 394, transmission, axle, steering, brakes, suspension, finish, cabin, options, or component dates.
