Story

1963 Chevrolet Impala Z11 427

The Z11 turned Chevrolet's full-size Impala Sport Coupe into a factory drag car. Its 427 was a stroked W-series engine rather than the later Mark IV 427. Chevrolet paired it with dual Carter four-barrels, cowl induction, a close-ratio Borg-Warner T10, Positraction, cooled metallic-lined drum brakes, special springs, and extensive aluminum body hardware.

Built for the strip

The package removed weight as deliberately as it added power. The hood, front fenders, bumpers, brackets, grille pieces, fan shroud, and other parts used aluminum. Radio, heater, sound deadener, and other street equipment were omitted. A front stabilizer bar was also left off. Published shipping weight was about 3,245 pounds.

The 427 W-engine

A 4.3125-inch bore and 3.65-inch stroke produced 427 cubic inches. The 13.5:1 engine used special heads, a solid-lifter cam, a two-piece high-rise intake, two Carter AFB carburetors, an aluminum water pump, and a cowl-fed air cleaner. Chevrolet rated it at 430 gross horsepower and 575 lb-ft.

How many were built

Surviving references do not agree. The long-standing specialist and Hemmings accounts report about 57 cars, while other summaries cite 50 production engines or cars. This page reports the range until a complete factory build ledger resolves it.

What proves one

A real Z11 starts with car-specific factory and ownership records. The VIN and Fisher tag establish the underlying 1963 Impala Sport Coupe, but they do not prove the special package by themselves. An original invoice or order, coherent race history, correct W-series engine identifiers, T10, axle, cooled brakes, aluminum pieces, deleted equipment, paint, trim, and date relationships must agree. Badges, an aluminum front clip, or a later 427 build are not enough.
