Story
1960 Plymouth Fury
Plymouth's top passenger-car line entered 1960 with a welded unit body, four bodies, and unusually broad V8 choices. The two-door hardtop, convertible, four-door sedan, and four-door hardtop belong on one Fury page. The related 122-inch-wheelbase Sport Suburban was a separately named wagon series and is not silently folded into the passenger-car production total.
From V-800 to SonoRamic
The standard 318 V-800 used a two-barrel carburetor and was rated at 230 gross horsepower. The 318 Super Pak added a four-barrel for 260 hp. Optional 361 and 383 B-series engines brought single- and dual-four-barrel induction, with the long-runner SonoRamic systems emphasizing midrange torque. The exact engine, carburetors, intake, transmission, exhaust, cooling, axle, dates, and paperwork must agree before one car is described as a factory performance build.
Power team and chassis
A three-speed manual served ordinary applications, PowerFlite was limited to the base 318, and TorqueFlite availability followed the selected engine. The high-performance 383 paths also listed a heavy-duty Warner Gear three-speed. Ratios changed with engine and transmission, while Sure-Grip was optional. Up front, longitudinal torsion bars worked with unequal-length control arms; parallel leaf springs carried the live rear axle. Four 11-inch drums were standard, with vacuum power assist optional.
Bodies, trim, and cabin
Fury identification included front-fender scripts, large circular fin medallions, ribbed rocker trim, upper belt-line moldings, chrome stone shields, backup lamps, an electric clock, and a lockable glove box. Factory material also documents five broad upholstery-color choices and optional swivel seats, power equipment, radios, and an RCA record player. The complete body, paint, upholstery, option, and production-date matrix still requires the factory selector and car-specific evidence.
Production and proof boundaries
The four retained passenger-body rows total 55,487: 18,079 two-door hardtops, 7,080 convertibles, 21,292 four-door sedans, and 9,036 four-door hardtops. No reviewed ledger divides those cars by engine, transmission, axle, brakes, paint, trim, option, plant, or date. Begin authentication with the serial, title, body structure, data plate, and ownership history, then reconcile every drivetrain, chassis, finish, cabin, and component-date claim.
