1958 Oldsmobile Super 88
The 1958 Super 88 shared Oldsmobile's 122.5-inch-wheelbase chassis with the Dynamic 88 but paired it with the more powerful engine and richer trim also associated with the Ninety-Eight. Five bodies belong on this family page: Holiday coupe, four-door sedan, Holiday sedan, convertible coupe, and Fiesta hardtop station wagon.
Four-barrel and J-2 Rocket power
The regular Super 88 engine was the 371-cubic-inch Rocket V8 with 10.0:1 compression, Rochester four-barrel induction, 305 gross horsepower, and 410 lb-ft. The optional J-2 used three progressive Rochester two-barrels for 312 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. A special-order J-2R racing path is retained as a separate, documentation-heavy configuration rather than silently treated as ordinary J-2 equipment.
Manual, Jetaway, and axle choices
A column-shifted, synchronized three-speed manual was standard and four-speed Jetaway Hydra-Matic optional. The manual used a 3.64:1 rear ratio; Jetaway Super 88s used 3.23:1 with 3.64 optional, while 3.07 was special-order. The gearbox, controls, axle, induction, cooling, exhaust, dates, and records must describe one coherent car.
Conventional or New-Matic suspension
The standard chassis combined Pivot-Poise independent coil-spring front suspension, a leaf-sprung live rear axle, direct-acting dampers, and Super-Hydraulic four-wheel drums. Optional New-Matic Ride replaced the springs with four air springs, automatic leveling, a storage tank, a front stabilizer bar, and a four-link rear drive. Surviving air-suspension equipment requires especially careful documentation because many cars were later converted.
Chrome, cabin, and proof
Super 88 equipment added the padded instrument panel, foam seat cushions, courtesy lights, parking-brake warning, special side moldings, and chrome rocker moldings. Paint, two-tone layout, leather, cloth, Morocceen trim, removable Trans-Portable radio, power accessories, and other options varied. Begin authentication with the serial, body and style plates, title, shell, and ownership history, then reconcile every drivetrain, chassis, finish, cabin, and dated component.
Production boundaries
A reviewed compilation reports five body rows totaling 88,992 Super 88s, including 3,799 convertibles. Those figures are useful reported counts, not an audited serial-distinct ledger, and no reviewed source divides production by engine, J-2 or J-2R equipment, transmission, axle, suspension, paint, trim, options, plant, date, export, or survivors.
