Story
1957 Oldsmobile Super 88
The 1957 Super 88 family combined two- or four-door sedan, two- or four-door holiday hardtop, convertible coupe, or four-door fiesta hardtop station wagon with two- and four-door sedans, Holiday hardtops, convertible coupe, Fiesta hardtop wagon, J-2 option configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.
Engines and transmissions
Oldsmobile enlarged its Rocket V8 to 371 cubic inches for 1957. The standard Super 88 used a four-barrel and was rated at 277 gross horsepower. The optional J-2 added three progressive two-barrel carburetors, higher compression, and a 300-hp rating. A separate competition setup was advertised, but competition parts do not redefine the ordinary J-2 road-car package. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.
Chassis and brakes
The 122-inch-wheelbase Super 88 used Pivot-Poise independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung live rear axle. Super-Hydraulic drums provided 191.7 square inches of lining area, with power assist optional. Steering, springs, dampers, axle ratio, wheels, tires, and brake assist must match the selected body and power team. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.
Body, trim, and proof
Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.
