- Ford's October 28, 1955 AMA specification sheet, revised November 11, identifies the 1956 Thunderbird axle as semi-floating with hypoid gears. Page 15 specifies 3.73:1 for the conventional transmission, 3.92:1 for overdrive, and 3.31:1 for automatic, plus shim adjustment for the pinion and its bearings, a three-pint lubricant capacity, SAE 90 for summer and winter, and SAE 80 for extreme cold.
