- Notes
- Mercury's September 1, 1964 AMA specification identifies the ordinary 289 V8 axle as conventional and semi-floating with a straddle-mounted hypoid pinion, 1.5-inch pinion offset, two differential pinions, and an 8.00-inch ring gear for the standard ratio. Pinion position uses shims, pinion-bearing adjustment uses a collapsible spacer, wheel bearings are single-row double-sealed ball bearings, capacity is 4.5 pints, and the specified hypoid extreme-pressure lubricant is SAE 90 for summer and winter or SAE 80 for extreme cold. These engineering details do not establish the special-order high-performance axle or an individual car's assembly.
