Story
1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
Chevrolet's exact-year information kit documents the IROC-Z as the Camaro's performance coupe, with three engine applications and a factory specification form that states each one's rating basis. This record describes the 5.7-liter application.
Engine identity and output
The kit's MVMA specification form gives the 5.7-liter V8 as 350 cubic inches, RPO L98, with tuned port fuel injection and a 9.3:1 compression ratio. Its SAE J1349 net ratings are 230 brake horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm, corrected to 77F/25C and 29.61 in. Hg. The form lists this application as optional on the IROC in all states, teamed with the 700-R4 automatic as its base transmission.
The 350-cubic-inch figure is the factory designation printed beside the metric displacement, not a conversion from rounded liters. An earlier version of this record carried 348 cubic inches, which was such a conversion; 348 identifies an unrelated W-series engine and has been corrected.
Application boundaries
The same form lists two 5.0-liter applications that this record does not describe: the 305-cubic-inch L03 with electronic fuel injection, which is the IROC coupe base engine, and the 305-cubic-inch LB9 with tuned port injection, rated separately by transmission. Those ratings are not transferred here. The dealer order guide separately requires the 5.7-liter engine to be ordered with the four-speed automatic, the G80 axle, J65 brakes, the KC4 oil cooler and QDZ tires, and marks the five-speed manual unavailable with it.
Evidence boundaries
Production totals, option combinations and original pricing remain unresolved in the reviewed evidence. The specification form states drive ratios of 3.27:1 base and 2.77:1 optional, both footnoted as applying with rear disc brakes; those qualifications are retained rather than presented as a single axle ratio.
