Story
1986 Dodge Conquest
The Conquest was imported for Dodge from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and built at the Okazaki plant. Chrysler Corporation's exact-year 1986 service manual carries the factory identification tables that separate the Dodge and Plymouth VIN series and the two engine applications behind them.
Configuration boundaries
The vehicle identification number list gives Dodge JB3BC54H and JB3BC54N series in Federal and California destinations. The VIN code chart reads engine digit H as the 2.6-liter with turbocharger and digit N as the 2.6-liter turbocharged engine with intercooler. Both are the same factory engine model, G54B, of 2,555 cm3 (155.9 cubic inches); the shared model name does not license mixing their applications.
The Group 14 fuel-system table binds control units to those applications: an MT and an AT unit for vehicles without an intercooler, and a single MT unit for vehicles with one. That table, not the general transmission chapter, establishes which gearbox belongs to which engine. The Group 21 chapter separately documents the five-speed floor-shift manual and the JM600 four-speed automatic, and EPA's two exact 1986 Dodge Conquest records list M5 and L4 transmissions. Within the reviewed model-year scope no intercooled automatic application appears; this record preserves that absence rather than inferring a general prohibition.
Evidence boundaries
Output figures come from a period newspaper report that explicitly covers imports for both Dodge and Plymouth. It states 145 hp at 5,000 rpm and 185 ft-lb at 2,500 rpm for the basic powerplant and 176 hp for the intercooled version. These are reported manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements, and they are stated for the engines rather than for individual transmissions.
The 1986 Conquest TSi brochure recovered during research carries a Plymouth imports imprint. It is not Dodge application evidence, so its figures, including its 223 lb-ft torque rating, are deliberately excluded from this record. Its article and brochure tire sizes also disagree, so no tire detail is carried.
Final-drive ratios remain unresolved: the service manual's code-plate illustration shows one example combination and does not describe every configuration. Exact horsepower for the intercooled engine has no stated engine speed in Dodge-applicable evidence. The integer 156 cubic inches is the rounded value EPA publishes alongside the factory 155.9.
