Story
1983 Ford EXP
Ford's exact-year U.S. EXP brochure, form 005-Ann. dated 8/82, documents a two-seat front-wheel-drive coupe sold through five equipment groups. The catalog's group summary, not prose, establishes which engine and transaxle belong together.
Configuration boundaries
Group 300B is standard with the 1.6-liter compound-valve hemispherical head (CVH) four-cylinder and a four-speed manual transaxle with overdrive fourth gear. The higher output 1.6-liter HO CVH is standard in Groups 301B, 302B and 303B and is offered in Groups 300B and 304B only with the High Altitude Emissions System. The 1.6-liter engine with Electronic Fuel Injection is standard in Group 304B, is marked unavailable in the other four groups, and is not available with the High Altitude Emissions System. The five-speed manual transaxle is standard in Groups 301B through 304B and unavailable in Group 300B.
The extra-cost Split-Torque Automatic Transaxle can be teamed with the higher output and electronic fuel-injected engines; its Group 300B footnote requires the higher output engine, so it is not joined to the standard CVH here. These applications are represented separately rather than flattened into one list of engines and transmissions.
Evidence gaps and photo pending
Horsepower, torque, compression, final-drive ratios, carburetor or metering hardware for the two non-EFI engines, exact factory engine codes and late-year changes remain unresolved in the reviewed evidence. The brochure states that 1983 EPA mileage estimates were unavailable when the catalog was approved for printing, so no economy figure is carried here. The 98-cubic-inch value used for all three engines is a rounded conversion of the nominal 1.6 liters, not a separately verified factory displacement designation. EFI identifies fuel injection, not forced induction; no 1984 turbo or Escort GT specification is imported. An exact-year exterior photograph with verified reuse rights is still being sought; brochure images are research evidence only.
