Story
1981 GMC Caballero
The 1981 Caballero family combined two-door, three-passenger coupe utility with double-wall pickup box with Caballero, Amarillo, Diablo, 229 V6, California 231 V6, 267 V8, 305 V8 configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.
Engines and transmissions
The 1981 power-team family retained 229 and California 231 V6 paths plus 267 and 305 V8 options while adding Computer Command Control. VIN identity, carburetor, controller, sensors, emissions hardware, transmission, axle, cooling, exhaust, component dates, and records must agree. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.
Chassis and brakes
The 1AW80 chassis used independent front coils and a coil-sprung live rear axle with standard power-assisted front discs and rear drums. Transmission, axle ratio, limited slip, F41 suspension, steering, wheels, and tires followed the ordered engine and emissions application. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.
Body, trim, and proof
Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.
