Story

The Z28 returned during the 1977 model year as a complete Sport Coupe built around balanced road performance. Chevrolet paired a Z28-specific version of the LM1 350 with its own transmission calibrations, axle ratios, suspension, brakes, wheels, spoilers, graphics, and instruments.

The engine is easy to misidentify in summaries. The regular Camaro's optional 350 was rated at 170 net horsepower, while the Z28-specific combination used a different hydraulic cam and low-back-pressure exhaust for 185 net horsepower and 280 lb-ft. California cars were rated at 175 horsepower and required the automatic transmission.

Four-speed cars used the aluminum-case Borg-Warner Super T-10 and 3.73 rear gears. Automatic cars used the Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 and 3.42 gears. Positraction was optional with either path, so a limited-slip differential is not automatic proof of the model.

Chevrolet restricted the Z28 to seven exterior colors with four assigned graphic schemes. Body-color 15x7 wheels, front and rear spoilers, blacked-out trim, and extensive decals make the car recognizable, but those pieces can all be reproduced. A serious authenticity review starts with paperwork and then reconciles the VIN, body tag, drivetrain stamps, axle code, paint, trim, dates, and surviving equipment.
