Story

A different kind of Charger

The 1975 Charger Special Edition moved the nameplate into personal-luxury territory. It was a long, formal two-door hardtop with fixed opera windows, a halo-style vinyl roof, quiet trim, and a cabin centered on comfort. That change is the point of the car, not something to apologize for: it records what Dodge thought a Charger buyer wanted after the peak muscle years.

What buyers could order

Most U.S. cars started with the 360 two-barrel V8 rated at 180 SAE net horsepower. California ordering used the 318 two-barrel baseline, and the E68 400 four-barrel kept a big-block choice on the sheet. Every path used a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic. The factory also paired the car with radial tires, power front discs, rear drums, torsion-bar front suspension, asymmetric rear leaf springs, and sway bars at both ends.

The Special Edition cabin

Standard vinyl buckets shared a folding center armrest. Buyers could move to split-back bench seats in cloth and vinyl, while the Brougham package added a richer crushed-velour interior, trunk carpeting, a spare-tire cover, and exterior tape stripes. The surviving color-and-trim book matters here because upholstery, paint, vinyl-roof, and stripe combinations were controlled rather than arbitrary.

Checking one today

An XS22 VIN establishes the Special Edition hardtop series, while the fifth character identifies the original engine family: G for 318, K for 360, or N for 400. Those characters are a starting point. A serious inspection still reconciles the VIN, body and option tags, broadcast sheet or window sticker, engine and transmission stamps, axle tag, date codes, paint layers, trim code, and restoration history. Badges, a landau roof, or a big-block swap cannot establish how a particular car left the factory.
