Story
1974 Pontiac Grand Prix
The 1974 Grand Prix family combined k57 two-door hardtop coupe with fixed rear quarter windows with Model J with 400 V8, Model J with optional 455 V8, SJ package with 455 V8 configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.
Engines and transmissions
Pontiac offered a 200-hp 400 and 250-hp 455, both with Turbo Hydra-Matic. The 455 was optional in Model J and included with SJ. Midyear HEI is a dated running change, not a universal early-production feature. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.
Chassis and brakes
All 1974 Grand Prix coupes used power steering, front independent coils, a four-link coil-sprung rear axle, power front discs, and rear drums. SJ added radial tires and matched suspension hardware. Exact axle ratio, Safe-T-Track status, steering, springs, bars, dampers, wheels, tires, and brakes follow the order and car-specific evidence. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.
Body, trim, and proof
Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.
