Story

1974 GMC Sprint

The 1974 Sprint combined a two-passenger coupe-utility cabin with an integrated six-foot-class cargo box. The base Sprint, upgraded Sprint Classic, two-tone Sierra Madre del Sur, wood-grain High Sierra, and rally-striped SP belong on one model-year page. They are configurations of the same GMC family, not duplicate cars.

Three V8 paths

The revised factory brochure lists a two-barrel 350 as standard, with four-barrel 400 and 454 V8s available. A column-shift three-speed manual was standard with the 350. Automatic availability and axle ratio depended on engine, while the 454 could also be paired with a close-ratio four-speed and 3.42 axle. The brochure does not print net horsepower or torque, so this page does not import an unverified rating from another GM application.

Coil-spring chassis and utility body

Independent front suspension used control arms and coil springs. A coil-sprung live rear axle carried the load, and hydraulic front discs worked with rear drums. The double-wall body included an inner tailgate and inner fender liners. Power steering, power brakes, trailering ratios, radial-tuned suspension, wheels, tires, and mirrors varied by configuration and must be matched to the car.

Trim and cabin choices

A foam-padded bench was standard in Sprint and Sprint Classic. Optional 90-degree swivel seats could be ordered with or without a center console. Sprint Classic added lower body-sill moldings, a vinyl-coated headliner, instrument-panel padding, keyed finish, and a fold-down center armrest. SP added identification, rally stripes, a bright grille, body-color sport mirrors, raised white-letter tires, and turbine wheel covers. High Sierra used wood-grain side and tailgate accents; Sierra Madre del Sur used special paint and moldings.

What proves one Sprint

Start with the GMC identity, title, body structure, tags, and ownership history. Then reconcile the engine, transmission, axle, brakes, suspension, paint scheme, vinyl roof, wood grain, stripes, cabin, options, and component dates. A Chevrolet nose, SP graphics, a 454 swap, or modern wheels cannot establish factory configuration.
