Story
1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 351 H.O.
The 1972 351 H.O. was a distinct R-code Cleveland package, not a generic label for every 351-powered Mach 1. Reviewed references report a 275 hp SAE-net rating, four-speed manual transmission, 3.91:1 Traction-Lok 9-inch rear axle, competition-suspension context, and H.O.-specific engine hardware.
The reported 398-car total covers all 1972 Mustang body styles fitted with the 351 H.O.: 366 SportsRoofs, 19 hardtops, and 13 convertibles. The 366 SportsRoof figure includes Mach 1 and non-Mach 1 bodies, so this page does not present it as a Mach 1-only production count. Sources separately report 27,675 Mach 1s across all engines.
An R in the VIN engine position and a 63R Mach 1 body code establish the starting identity. The warranty label, invoice or Marti report, engine casting and date evidence, four-speed identification, axle tag, paint, and trim should agree. Ram Air hardware, stripes, spoilers, hood treatment, or 351 badging cannot authenticate the H.O. package by themselves.
