Story
1971 Ford Ranchero
Ford sold four 1971 Ranchero series: Ranchero, Ranchero 500, Ranchero GT, and Ranchero Squire. The Ranchero Special was an appearance package available across those series, not another model identity. This page keeps the series, package, and six documented engine paths together so shoppers can compare one family without encountering near-duplicate car pages.
Six engines and matched power teams
The 250-cubic-inch six was standard in Ranchero, 500, and Squire, while the GT started with the 302 two-barrel V8. Optional 351 two- and four-barrel V8s led to the 370-hp 429 Cobra Jet and Ram-Air CJ-R. Three-speed manual, Hurst-shifted four-speed, and SelectShift automatic availability depended on engine and series. The VIN engine code, drivetrain, induction, cooling, exhaust, controls, axle, and dates must agree before assigning one power team.
Utility chassis and brakes
Independent ball-joint front suspension used coil springs and shocks, while the live rear axle rode leaf springs with anti-friction inserts. Standard self-adjusting drums measured 10 by 2.5 inches at the front and 10 by 2 inches at the rear; 351- and 429-powered cars used wider rear drums. Power front discs, heavy-duty suspension, performance handling, and trailer equipment were factory choices whose parts and records must be reconciled.
Series, Special package, and cabin
The GT used a sport-scoop hood, ribbed argent rocker molding, GT letters, sporty wheel covers, and belted whitewalls. The Squire added woodtone side and tailgate panels plus deluxe cabin trim. The Special package combined one of eight exterior colors with a black hood, black vinyl roof, body stripe, black box interior, racing mirrors, and bright wheel trim. Full-width seats, high-back buckets, instruments, radios, air conditioning, power equipment, and trim varied by series and order.
Production and proof
The four retained series rows reconcile to 24,946 vehicles: 6,041 Rancheros, 12,678 Ranchero 500s, 3,632 GTs, and 2,595 Squires. No reviewed audited ledger divides that total by engine, transmission, axle, brake, paint, trim, Special package, plant, date, export, or survivor status. Authentication starts with the VIN, title, body, data plate, and ownership history, then reconciles every drivetrain, chassis, finish, cabin, option, and component-date claim.
