Story

1971 AMC Hornet SC/360

AMC built the SC/360 as its compact 1971 performance Hornet, with one two-door-sedan identity and two factory engine states. The standard 360 used a two-barrel carburetor and made 245 gross horsepower. The optional Go Package added the 285-horsepower four-barrel engine, functional Ram Air, dual exhaust, tachometer, handling package, and D70x14 white-letter Polyglas tires. Those are configurations of the same SC/360, not separate cars.

The standard car paired its 360 with a floor-shifted three-speed manual. Shift-Command automatic was optional, while the Hurst-shifted four-speed belonged to the four-barrel path. Axle ratios changed with engine and transmission; Twin-Grip was optional and required with the 3.91 ratio. Standard SC/360 identity also included individual reclining vinyl seats, a custom steering wheel, 14x6 slot-style wheels, a wraparound stripe, and the reflective red rear panel. The hood scoop is Go Package or optional Ram Air equipment, not a universal SC/360 marker.

For an individual car, begin with the 61-series model identity and reconcile the complete VIN, window sticker or build records, engine and transmission codes, axle evidence, paint and trim, component dates, and ownership history. Stripes, a scoop, badges, wheels, or a current 360 can support an inspection, but none of them alone proves a born-as-built SC/360.
