Story

1969 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air IV

The regular 1969 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air IV is the first-generation Firebird path that sits beside, not inside, the new-for-1969 Trans Am story. Over-Drive identifies the Firebird 400 Ram Air IV package as RPO 347 with the L67 engine code, 345 horsepower, and specific manual/automatic transmission installation. That makes this page a regular Firebird 400 Ram Air IV guide, not a WS4 Trans Am guide.

Production evidence is narrow and should stay that way. Gold Eagle reports 157 Firebird Ram Air IV hardtops for 1969 and says 55 were Trans Ams. CAAAR Guide lists a separate 1969 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air IV row with 102 cars. Those numbers reconcile to the regular Firebird boundary, but they are still reported reference totals rather than proof for any individual car.

The authentication path is paperwork first: PHS or factory billing documentation, the L67/RPO 347 order path, round-port Ram Air IV engine evidence, carburetor and induction details, transmission and axle markings, and date-correct body/trim evidence. Hood scoops, 400 badges, Trans Am striping, or any attractive restoration are context only unless they agree with the documentation.

Approved 1969 Trans Am rear-quarter photo used as same-year Firebird history context only; Trans Am spoilers and stripes do not authenticate this regular Firebird page.Matt Morgan / Wikimedia Commons · CC BY-SA 2.0 Commons media
