Story

1969 Holden Monaro

The 1969 HT Monaro kept Holden's pillarless five-seat coupe but broadened it into five model-code paths: regular Monaro six and V8, Monaro GTS six and V8, and the 81837 GTS 350. Keeping them together makes the engine, transmission, chassis, paint, and trim differences comparable without creating near-duplicate pages.

Regular Monaro, GTS, and GTS 350

The regular 80337/80437 Monaro paired restrained trim with six-cylinder or V8 choices. The 80737/80837 GTS added sports instruments, console, centered stripes, twin hood scoops, badges, wheel treatment, and firmer chassis context. The 81837 GTS 350 was a dedicated performance configuration with manual or automatic Chevrolet 350 power, Chevrolet rear axle, power front discs, and long-range equipment.

Seven engine families

The range covered 161, 186, and 186S Red sixes; Holden's new 253 and 308 V8s; the outgoing Chevrolet 307; and the Chevrolet 350. The four-speed 350M used 10.25:1 compression and a 300-bhp rating. The Powerglide 350A used lower compression and a 275-bhp rating. Engine size, dress-up parts, or a swap cannot establish the body model or born-with configuration.

Manual and automatic paths

Regular applications used a three-speed column manual, Opel or Saginaw four-speeds, or Powerglide according to engine and model. Trimatic arrived late in HT production for applicable configurations but not the GTS 350. The historic GTS 350 specification identifies a Saginaw four-speed and explicitly says a Muncie was never factory fitted. Case, controls, pedals, floor opening, axle, dates, and records must agree.

Axles, brakes, and suspension

Regular powertrains used GM-H banjo or Chevrolet rear axles with application-specific ratios and optional limited slip. The GTS 350 used a Chevrolet Salisbury limited-slip rear. The HT front suspension retained control arms and coils but changed to rubber inner pivots; the live rear rode on semi-elliptic leaves. Four-wheel drums were the regular baseline, power front discs were available, and GTS 350 used power-assisted front discs with rear drums.

HT appearance and cabin

The HT is recognized by its plastic grille, squared rear quarters, and larger stacked tail lamps wrapping around the corners. GTS models used twin nonfunctional hood scoops and broad centered stripes, with documented delete and color-pairing variations. Inside, round dials brought the tachometer into the main GTS cluster. Seats, console, controls, vinyl or houndstooth trim, paint, stripes, and wheels still require build-plate and material evidence.

Production and identification

Public references commonly estimate roughly 700 HT GTS 350s, but the reviewed set does not reconcile a plant-ledger total or splits for models, engines, transmissions, colors, trims, or calendar year. Start with the 80337, 80437, 80737, 80837, or 81837 body identity and chassis stamping, then reconcile the shell, engine, gearbox, axle, brakes, suspension, tank, paint, trim, dates, and ownership history.

Native Australian values

Reviewed references report introduction prices of A$2,651 for Monaro, A$3,183 for GTS, and A$3,995 for GTS 350, plus later Australian auction results. The site's structured pricing contract supports USD and CAD rather than AUD, so these native-currency figures remain cited gaps instead of being mislabeled, converted without a dated exchange-rate contract, or presented as appraisals.

Still Researching

  • production Reviewed public references do not provide an audited split for regular Monaro, GTS, GTS 350, engines, transmissions, paints, trims, or calendar-year production; the roughly 700 GTS 350 figure remains an estimate.
  • paint colors The reviewed specialist ledger establishes regular and GTS palettes but does not provide a complete build-date and model-code compatibility matrix or all special-order colors.
  • authenticity markers Public model references cannot prove one car's born-with shell, drivetrain, paint, trim, options, or component dates.
