Story

1968 Ford Fairlane

The 1968 Fairlane family paired the regular Fairlane hardtop and sedan with a broader Fairlane 500 range of fastback, hardtop, sedan, convertible, and wagon bodies. Torino and Torino GT shared the intermediate platform but remain separate named lines rather than aliases for this page.

Engines and transmissions

The regular path began with the 200-cubic-inch six. Small-block V8, 390 FE two- and four-barrel, and limited 427 FE applications expanded the range. Three-speed and four-speed manuals and SelectShift automatics varied by engine and body. Engine code, castings, induction, controls, cooling, axle, dates, and records must agree.

Chassis and brakes

Independent coil-spring front suspension and a leaf-sprung live rear axle supported the line. Dual-circuit drum brakes were the baseline, with power front discs available by application. Axle housing, ratio, limited-slip status, springs, dampers, steering, brakes, wheels, and tires must be matched to the ordered powertrain.

Bodies, trim, and identity

Fairlane and Fairlane 500 differed in body availability, carpeting, upholstery, moldings, glass, and identification. Start with the VIN, warranty plate, title, shell, and ownership history, then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, and trim. A swapped FE engine, styled wheels, stripes, or badges cannot establish factory configuration.
