Story
1968 AMC American
The 1968 American was AMC's 106-inch-wheelbase compact and the last new-car line still carrying the Rambler name. Five factory models belong here: base two- and four-door sedans, the 440 four-door sedan and station wagon, and the Rogue two-door hardtop. The 1969 SC/Rambler is a separate model-year performance program.
Four engine paths
The base American used the 128-hp 199 six, while the Rogue made the 145-hp 232 six standard. Both lines could be ordered with the 200-hp 290 two-barrel or 225-hp 290 four-barrel V8 where the factory selector permitted. Engine, carburetor, transmission, axle, cooling, exhaust, brakes, suspension, dates, and records must be evaluated as one configuration.
Manual, automatic, and four-speed choices
A column-shift three-speed manual was the regular gearbox. Shift-Command automatic applications used column or console controls according to model and powertrain, while the floor-shift four-speed was a V8 performance choice. The exact application and axle ratio still follow the factory selector and individual-car records.
Compact chassis
The American combined independent coil-spring front suspension with a semi-elliptic leaf-spring live rear axle. Six-cylinder cars used 9-inch drums, V8 cars used 10-inch drums, and power front discs were optional with V8 power. Handling packages, power steering, power brakes, Twin-Grip, wheels, and tires varied by order.
Body, finish, and cabin
The base, 440, and Rogue had different exterior and cabin equipment. The 440 added comfort and trim, while the Rogue paired the pillarless hardtop with reclining front seats and sport-oriented details. The body plate, protected paint, upholstery, trim mountings, controls, and delivery records matter more than replaceable scripts, wheels, or a later drivetrain.
Production and price boundaries
Two reviewed public histories report conflicting 1968 totals, 94,369 and 80,982, so neither is presented as a settled configuration ledger. A period AMC pricing release preserved by the Congressional Record lists delivered prices for all five bodies, but no reviewed source divides production by engine, transmission, axle, brake, paint, trim, option, plant, date, export, or survivor status.
