Story
1965 Chevrolet Corvette
The 1965 Corvette continued the second-generation Sting Ray as a two-seat coupe or convertible on a 98-inch wheelbase. Chevrolet gave the front fenders three functional vertical exhaust louvers, removed the prior hood depressions, revised the grille, seats, door panels, instruments, and radio surround, and made a power antenna standard. Production reached 23,562 cars: 8,186 coupes and 15,376 convertibles.
Five factory engine paths shared this one model-year identity. The standard 327-cubic-inch V8 produced 250 gross horsepower. RPO L75 supplied 300 horsepower, L79 supplied 350, L76 supplied 365, and Rochester mechanical fuel injection made L84 the 375-horsepower small-block. Midyear, RPO L78 introduced the 396-cubic-inch Mark IV big-block at 425 gross horsepower. The 2,157 L78 installations and the final 771 fuel-injected cars are configurations of the 1965 Corvette, not separate model pages.
A three-speed manual was standard on 434 cars by subtraction from the published regular-production transmission totals. RPO M20 accounted for 21,107 four-speeds and RPO M35 Powerglide for 2,021 automatics. A close-ratio M22 was available by special order, but the reviewed sources do not establish a defensible production count. The independent rear suspension retained its frame-mounted differential, half shafts, struts, torque arms, and transverse leaf spring. Positraction was ordered on 19,965 cars, with ratios selected for the engine and transmission.
Four-wheel 11.75-inch disc brakes with four-piston calipers became standard. RPO J50 added power assist, while 316 buyers took the J61 drum-brake credit. RPO F40 special suspension was ordered on 975 cars. These changes make brake hardware especially important during inspection: later conversions, replacement calipers, and restored components do not by themselves establish how a particular car was delivered.
Factory records list Tuxedo Black, Ermine White, Nassau Blue, Glen Green, Milano Maroon, Silver Pearl, Rally Red, and Goldwood Yellow. Vinyl and leather interiors were available in multiple solid and white-accent combinations. Side exhaust, a teakwood steering wheel, telescopic steering, power steering, power windows, air conditioning, tinted glass, an auxiliary hardtop, cast-aluminum wheels, and a 36-gallon tank broadened the equipment list.
Authentication begins with the 194375 coupe or 194675 convertible serial pattern and the car's ownership history, then checks the trim tag, body source, fiberglass panels, frame, engine assembly stamp and suffix, induction, transmission, differential, brakes, suspension, paint layers, glass, hardware, and cabin details. L78, fuel injection, M22, Positraction, side exhaust, cast-aluminum wheels, colors, and trim are frequently recreated. Correct-looking parts support inspection, but a car's original configuration still requires coherent records and date-consistent physical evidence.
