1964 Pontiac GTO
The 1964 Pontiac GTO is the first-year LeMans-based option package that made Pontiac's midsize car impossible to ignore. It was not yet a separate GTO series; it was a Series 22 Tempest LeMans ordered with the GTO package on the sports coupe, hardtop coupe, or convertible body. That package brought the 389 V8 into the midsize shell, added GTO badging, dual simulated hood scoops, heavier suspension hardware, redline-tire/wide-wheel context, and a floor-shifted three-speed manual with Hurst linkage.
The standard GTO engine was the 389 four-barrel V8, reported at 325 hp and 428 lb-ft. The famous Tri-Power setup was optional and is important to the story, but this base page keeps the standard four-barrel engine as the canonical record and treats Tri-Power as an option path that needs its own engine-code and paperwork proof.
Production references checked for this page report 32,450 1964 GTOs: 18,422 hardtops, 7,384 sports coupes, and 6,644 convertibles. NH GTO's engine-code table reports 24,205 four-barrel cars and 8,245 Tri-Power cars. Those totals explain why the first-year GTO is both a milestone and a documentation trap: trim and badges can be added, and a Tri-Power intake can be installed later.
