Story

1964 Buick Wildcat

The 1964 Wildcat family combined model 4647 two-door sport coupe, 4639 four-door hardtop, 4669 four-door sedan, or 4667 convertible with two-door Sport Coupe, four-door hardtop, four-door sedan, convertible configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.

Engines and transmissions

The KT 401 Wildcat 445 was standard. Optional KW 425 Wildcat 465 and KX dual-four-barrel Super Wildcat paths changed displacement, induction, output, and identification while retaining application-specific transmission, axle, cooling, exhaust, and date requirements. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.

Chassis and brakes

The full-size Safety-X frame used independent front coils and a link stabilizer bar plus a three-link, track-bar-located coil-spring rear axle. Manual or power steering, manual or power brakes, springs, dampers, axle, ratio, wheels, and tires remained configuration-specific. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.

Body, trim, and proof

Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.

Still Researching

  • production The reported 84,245 total and four body counts do not resolve engine, transmission, axle, positive traction, paint, trim, roof, option, plant, date, export, or survivor intersections.
  • paint colors Fifteen factory paint entries are retained, but no reviewed final matrix resolves every lower/upper color, fabric roof, body, cabin trim, special-order, plant, and running-date combination.
  • interior The brochure establishes bench, bucket, console, expanded-vinyl, regular/custom trim, and tachometer paths but not every trim code, body, paint, roof, supplier, option, and build-date combination.
  • authenticity markers Public model-year references cannot establish one survivor's born-with shell, engine, transmission, axle, chassis, finish, cabin, options, component dates, or ownership history.
