Story
1963 Oldsmobile Starfire
Oldsmobile offered the 1963 Starfire as a Holiday hardtop coupe and convertible. They share one model-year identity, standard Starfire power team, chassis specification, and core trim vocabulary, so both bodies belong on this page rather than appearing as duplicate cars. Dynamic 88, Super 88, Ninety-Eight, turbocharged Jetfire, and other Starfire years remain separate.
Starfire V8 and console Hydra-Matic
The 394-cubic-inch Starfire V8 used a four-barrel carburetor, 10.5:1 compression, and factory ratings of 345 gross horsepower and 440 lb-ft. A console-mounted Hydra-Matic, 3.42:1 semi-floating hypoid rear axle, power steering, and power brakes were standard Starfire equipment. A later manual gearbox or changed engine is part of a survivor's history, not another factory configuration.
Guard-Beam chassis
The full-size Starfire rode a 123-inch wheelbase Guard-Beam frame with side rails and torque-box construction. Coil springs supported both ends: independent Pivot-Poise front suspension used direct-acting shocks and counter-dive geometry, while a four-link live rear axle used Twin-Triangle Stability. Self-adjusting Air-Scoop drum brakes provided 191.7 square inches of lining area.
Body, finish, and cabin
The coupe's contoured roof and concave rear glass, the convertible top structure, the satin-aluminum body-side panel, Starfire emblems, grille, lamps, and bumpers are body-specific evidence. Both bodies used bucket seating and a full-length console containing the Hydra-Matic selector, tachometer, and glove box. The factory chart preserves fifteen exterior finishes and Starfire leather-and-Morocceen trim, but one car's body plate, protected material, build date, and records control its delivered combination.
Production conflict and proof
The retained working total is 25,549 cars: 21,148 coupes and 4,401 convertibles. Another compilation reports 21,489 coupes, which would produce 25,890; that conflict remains visible and no false precision is inferred. Reported base prices of $4,129 for the coupe and $4,742 for the convertible also conflict with a period-history compilation's $4,131 coupe figure. Authentication starts with the serial, title, body structure, body plate, and ownership history, then reconciles every drivetrain, chassis, finish, cabin, option, and component-date claim.
