Story
1959 DeSoto Adventurer
The 1959 Adventurer was DeSoto's final limited-production performance flagship before the name expanded into a broader series for 1960. Its M491 identity covered two configurations: the two-door Sportsman hardtop and the convertible. Current National DeSoto Club registry research reports 602 hardtops and 97 convertibles, correcting the long-published 590-hardtop figure.
A 350-horsepower wedge
The Hemi era was over. The 1959 Adventurer used Chrysler's 383-cubic-inch wedge V8 with a 4.25-inch bore, 3.375-inch stroke, 10.1:1 compression, hydraulic lifters, and a higher-performance camshaft. Two Carter AFB four-barrels, 2790S in front and 2791S at the rear, supported a factory rating of 350 gross horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 425 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm.
That engine was not unique proof of an Adventurer. DeSoto offered the same dual-quad package in Firesweep, Firedome, and Fireflite models, identified by an Adventurer Powered fender badge. A complete car still needs M491 serial identity, the correct body and tag evidence, and a reconciled history.
TorqueFlite, axle choices, and conflicts
The three-speed TorqueFlite automatic was standard, with 2.45 low, 1.45 second, and 1.00 drive ratios. A three-speed manual was available by special order. Standard TorqueFlite cars used a 3.31 rear axle; 2.93 was available, Sure-Grip could be ordered, and steeper ratios were offered through dealers. One auction description calls its car's transmission PowerFlite, but the factory specification and model-year records control the model-level statement here.
Torsion bars, leaf springs, and drums
The 126-inch-wheelbase frame carried independent front suspension with longitudinal torsion bars and direct-acting shocks. A live rear axle rode on 60-inch, six-leaf semi-elliptic springs. Optional Level-Cruise rear air suspension appeared in factory service information. Power-assisted 12-inch hydraulic drums handled braking at all four wheels. Modern discs, altered springs, or incomplete air-suspension conversions must be identified as later changes.
Hardtop and convertible
Both bodies share one page because they are factory configurations of the same M491 model family. The hardtop used a black or white textured roof finish designed to resemble leather. Gold-anodized grille work, an engine-turned gold side sweep, Adventurer scripts, a narrow rear-fender shield, gold wheel covers, deck-lid bars, dual mirrors, dual rear antennas, and 8.50 x 14 whitewalls defined the model's exterior reference.
Swivel-seat cabin and options
The driver's Sport Swivel Seat was standard and turned outward to ease entry and exit; the passenger swivel seat was optional. The cabin used black, white, and gold tri-tone materials, dashboard push buttons, a padded instrument panel, electric clock, and hand-brake warning light. Available equipment included power windows, six-way power seat, air conditioning, radios, Solex glass, automatic headlamp dimming, and a Mirrormatic mirror. Current accessories need hardware and record support before being called factory installed.
Paint and identity
Reviewed exact-model records support Black and Pearl White bodies with gold exterior accents. Factory refinishing material also documents black and white roof-texture formulas and an Adventurer Gold interior finish, but no complete public Adventurer-only placement-code matrix was found. The firewall body tag, protected finishes, trim mounts, restoration file, and registry record remain necessary for one car.
Start authentication with the M491 prefix and the reviewed M491100001 sequence beginning, then reconcile the body tag, body style, ML-383 engine, AFB carburetor tags, transmission, axle, brakes, suspension, paint, trim, cabin, component dates, and ownership history. Badges, gold trim, dual carburetors, or a black-and-gold restoration cannot substitute for that chain.
Production, price, and market context
The registry-supported total is 699 cars: 602 hardtops and 97 convertibles. Hemmings reports base prices of $4,427 for the hardtop and $4,749 for the convertible; a later auction description gives a conflicting $4,272 hardtop figure, which is not silently merged. The dated auction results on this page span different bodies, restorations, equipment, conditions, and provenance. They provide market history, not an appraisal of another Adventurer.
