Story

1954 Kaiser Darrin

The Kaiser Darrin put Howard "Dutch" Darrin's low roadster body over a modified Henry J chassis. Its fiberglass shell, doors that slide forward into the front fenders, and three-position top made it unlike any other American production car of 1954. Kaiser built 435, all within one model-year family identified as KF-161.

Willys power and overdrive

Production cars used the 161-cubic-inch Willys Hurricane F-head inline-six. Reviewed exact-model records rate it at 90 bhp at 4,200 rpm and show a single downdraft carburetor, three-speed manual, and Borg-Warner overdrive. Cadillac V8 and supercharged cars belong to Dutch Darrin's later conversion activity; they were not ordinary factory engine options.

A chassis adapted for the roadster

The 100-inch-wheelbase chassis used independent front suspension with wishbones and coil springs. A live rear axle rode on semi-elliptic leaf springs, and hydraulic drums handled braking at all four wheels. Exact axle ratio, castings, dates, brake hardware, and replacement history remain individual-car questions.

Pocket doors and the Deauville top

The factory folder describes the Aeron fiberglass body and shows the nylon top fully raised, in landau position, and stowed beneath its own rear lid. A separate trunk lid preserved luggage access. The production body also used a one-piece windshield, raised headlamps, and separate directional lamps. Those details help distinguish production shells from prototype features or later repairs.

Four finishes, color-keyed cabins

Reviewed model histories name Champagne, Red Sail, Yellow Satin, and Pine Tint lacquer finishes. Vinyl bucket-seat trim was color keyed, while instruments included a tachometer grouped ahead of the driver. Current paint, leather upholstery, wire wheels, or top material do not prove original delivery without protected finishes and serial-specific records.

Authentication boundaries

A credible car should reconcile chassis, body plate, title, frame, fiberglass shell, Willys engine, carburetor, transmission and overdrive, axle, brakes, suspension, protected paint, cabin, top, wheels, and ownership history. Auction records show that chassis and shortened body-number formats can differ, so one tag or title is not enough. Later Darrin conversions deserve documentation on their own terms rather than being represented as factory configurations.

Price and market context

The reviewed sources disagree slightly on original price: Savoy reports $3,655 and RM Sotheby's reports $3,668. Both remain visible pending a dated factory price schedule. Two restored-car sales and one incomplete modified-project no-sale provide deliberately bounded market context, not an appraisal. Completeness, body integrity, drivetrain, conversion history, provenance, and restoration quality dominate an individual Darrin's value.
