Studebaker-owned Paxton Products and the Granatelli team developed the R3 as the Avanti's factory high-performance endpoint. The program enlarged the Studebaker V-8 to 304.5 cubic inches and paired pressure-box supercharging with special engine, axle, chassis, body-clearance, and instrument changes.
